Simply put, offline download in OTT refers to a feature that allows users to download video content while connected to the internet, and watch it offline when internet connection is limited or unavailable.
Since Netflix introduced the feature in 2016, Offline Download has become ubiquitous in the streaming world. Previously, online streaming was restricted to areas with Wi-Fi or, at an additional cost, mobile network coverage. However, offline viewing unlocked new possibilities for viewers: watching videos on planes, on the commute, on trips abroad, and in areas without network coverage.
For consumers, this translates to increased flexibility and the ability to plan for seamless content viewing even with limited connectivity, increasing the app's value in their daily lives.
For service providers, this translates to improved user engagement, boosted views, and enhanced brand loyalty. In fact, offering offline viewing is now widely considered a crucial app feature for all video services.
Users can download videos (and individual episodes within shows) to their devices using the convenient "Download" button on each title. Choose whether downloads can be made via cellular data or Wi-Fi only in the app's Settings.
Service providers control which videos are available for download via configuration in Brightcove Videocloud. Additionally, Accedo One empowers you to define who can download content (e.g., by subscription tier) and set expiration times for downloaded videos.
Offline Download is a premium feature and currently available to Brightcove customers using Accedo One. Please check with your Accedo representative for pricing and enablement.
